17th century fortified house belonging to a recently ennobled family from Ménerbes, Girardet de Castelas. Sébastien, first of the name, occupied the function of viguier (judicial officer) in Ménerbes in 1685. Located at the start of the road to Bonnieux, the house was integrated into the Bourgade Saint-Estève created in the 16th century. Across the street, a mansion belonging to Richard Constance channeled visitors to the now missing Elm Gate.
Note the staircase turret on the facade with several fire hydrants. The ground floor housed a coaching inn in the 17th century, then an oil mill and a silk factory in the 19th century.
The Sieurs Girardet obtained the favor of using the water from the public fountain in Place de l'Orme to run their factories. In 1735, a new covered public fountain was installed in their residential courtyard, on the edge of Chemin du Réalet, today called rue de la Fontaine. Its vaulted arch is still visible.
