Located on the site of the old feudal castle of Menerba, whose origins date back to 1081, La Carmejane is a true summary of several centuries of history.
Towards the end of the 15th century, it became the home of a large family from Gascony, the Carmejane, who prospered in Ménerbes until the revolution. Joseph-Charles (1772-1830), Empire baron and general, distinguished himself at the Battle of Valmy.
Medieval vestiges are preserved in the high facade which dominates the lane and which tells us about the ancient organization of the castle. The corbelled balcony represents a testimony of the end of the Middle Ages and supports a classical style balustrade. Several windows, integrated or redesigned, date from the Renaissance and the 17th century. In the 18th century, the ensemble underwent profound transformations with the reorganization of the main facade and, at the top, the late construction of a small watchtower.
La Carmejane is now a private residence, fully restored, with sumptuous gardens located on the north face of the property. It dominates ancient superimposed terraces which preserve in the rock walls many rock elements.
